Aimée Phillips
The Orange Gloaming of Forest Fires, 2023

Introductory text by Jasper Coppes:
'The Orange Gloaming of Forest Fires is aimed at breaking down the wall between critical theory and desire. Theorising sex can be a very dry exercise, but not when you add some sensual flirting to the mix. The discrepancy between thought and matter, between rational positions and the slippery nature of real bodies and things is a problem that many artists will be able to relate to. Phillips navigates this challenging territory with intoxicating literary exuberance and critical wit-mingling sharp theoretical observations into a concoction of juicy fiction. She uses her references to the field of gender studies to argue against choosing a side in the debate around sexual experience, but she also treats references as bits and pieces of literary material to play with at will. The result is not just an essay about a contemporary and relevant theme. It is an example of how to flirt with theories of desire and dance to its bewildering rhythms and tunes.'
